I recently went through the process of verifying an organization in the D-U-N-S system in Lithuania, completing all the main stages of the procedure along the way. In practice, it turned out not to be overly complicated, but the process itself can take quite a while: additional checks, correspondence, or even phone calls may be required at various stages. The organization's classification in the D&B database can also present certain challenges. This is particularly important for nonprofits, as the classification may affect subsequent verification by other services, such as Apple Developer. I therefore decided to share my experience and explain in detail what you need to do if you want to obtain and verify a D-U-N-S number for your organization yourself, without hiring specialists. Below, I have outlined the main steps, the required information and documents, and the points that deserve special attention.
What is D-U-N-S (Data Universal Numbering System)?
A D-U-N-S (Data Universal Numbering System) number — is a unique nine-digit numerical identifier created by the international agency Dun & Bradstreet (D&B). It serves as a global equivalent of a corporate tax identification number and confirms an organization's existence, legitimacy, and legal structure in a worldwide database.
Why nonprofit organizations (NPOs / NGOs) need a D-U-N-S number
Although the D-U-N-S number was originally created for the commercial sector, it has become a key verification tool for nonprofit organizations and charitable foundations. Its main uses include:
- Access to grants and international funding: Foreign foundations, grant providers, and institutional donors (including USAID) use D-U-N-S to verify an NGO's legal status and financial transparency and to prevent fraud.
- Participation in special programs offered by IT giants: Global service providers (Apple, Microsoft, Google) offer nonprofits free technology, cloud grants, or fee waivers, requiring D-U-N-S as proof of legal entity status.
- Partnerships with Businesses and CSR Programs: Large corporations and government institutions request a D-U-N-S number when setting up corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs and conducting due diligence on counterparties.
- Financial Transparency and International Compliance: The number connects an NPO to the international D&B registry, simplifying audits, reporting, and verification of its business reputation by banks and international partners.
What Benefits and Programs Does D-U-N-S Unlock for NPOs?
- Apple Developer Program: Nonprofit organizations can change their developer account category from Corporation in Non-Profit, which provides a full exemption from the $99 annual membership fee (fee waiver). The NPO's legal name from the D&B record is displayed in the App Store as the official seller.
- Microsoft for Nonprofits: A D-U-N-S Number and verification of legal status enable organizations to register a dedicated Microsoft 365 tenant and gain access to free technology grants and discounts on Microsoft 365, Azure, and Dynamics 365 services.
- Google Play Console: In 2023, Google introduced new mandatory developer account verification requirements. A D-U-N-S Number is required to register a corporate organization account (as opposed to a personal account), and the information in the Google profile must exactly match the D&B database.
Preparation: What You Need to Obtain a Number
Dun & Bradstreet assigns D-U-N-S Numbers free of charge. Before applying, make sure that the organization has not already been registered in the database (you can check the number using the free search on dnb.com, through an Apple developer account, or via regional partners).
Have the following information ready to complete the application:
- The organization's official name in English (exactly as stated in its incorporation documents).
- Registered and physical address.
- Official phone number and public website on the organization's own domain (social media pages and placeholder websites are not accepted).
- Full name and contact details of the director / authorized representative.
- Legal structure: select status Non-Profit / NGO.
- Industry code (SIC code): for example, 6732/6733 (for educational and charitable foundations), 8742, or another applicable classification code.
- Number of employees and annual budget/revenue in USD equivalent.
- Supporting documents: certificate of state registration of the nonprofit organization, tax identification number (INN/PAN), or a decision granting nonprofit status (for example, an IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter in the United States).
Step-by-step guide: how to get a D-U-N-S number for free
- Choosing an application channel:
- Through the Dun & Bradstreet website (dnb.com / support.dnb.com): go to the section for obtaining a number, enter a contact email address, and select the category Developer Program or general organization registration.
- Through your Apple Developer account: a number can be requested directly when registering or setting up an organization account, after which the data is automatically sent to D&B.
- Through regional representatives: in Russia and Belarus, applications are submitted through Interfax-D&B; in Central Asian countries, through Interfax-Kazakhstan; in Ukraine, through a D&B partner (A.B.M. Risk-Inform); and in India, through D&B India.
- Completing the application form:
- Complete all required and optional fields using transliteration or in English.
- Provide a detailed description of the organization's activities and include a link to its active website.
- Uploading and reviewing documents:
- If necessary, attach scans of the registration documents (up to 5 files).
- Wait for an email confirming that your application has been opened. If necessary, a D&B representative will contact you by phone or email to clarify the details.
- Processing time:
- When applying through Apple Developer: it usually takes 1–5 business days to assign a number and up to 2 business days to transfer the data to Apple's system.
- For a standard international D&B application: from 5–7 days to 30 business days.
How a nonprofit can verify its status with international services
1. Verifying nonprofit status in the Apple Developer Program
- Obtain a D-U-N-S number using the nonprofit's official legal name.
- Go to the Apple Support page (developer.apple.com/contact) and select the account management section (Membership and Account).
- Submit a request asking to change the organization type from Corporation on Non-Profit and apply for the annual fee waiver (fee waiver).
- At Apple's request, upload official proof of nonprofit status (for example, a tax authority ruling or an official registry extract).
- Once verified, Apple will update the account status and apply the fee waiver.
2. Validation in Microsoft for Nonprofits
- Go to the Nonprofit Hub (nonprofit.microsoft.com) and begin registering a new or existing Microsoft 365 tenant.
- Provide the nonprofit's legal details: name, address, phone number, website, and legal identification number.
- The application is forwarded to Microsoft's authorized validation partners, who verify that the eligibility criteria are met (the process usually takes up to 3 business days).
- Once approved, the organization receives full access to grants for Microsoft services.
Important Details and Common Mistakes
- 100% Match of Organization Details: The organization's name, legal address, and legal structure in the D&B database, incorporation documents, and Apple / Microsoft / Google profiles must match exactly, including punctuation.
- Legal Entities Only: You cannot apply under a brand name, branch, or organizational unit—Apple and other services will reject such verification.
- Website Requirement: The nonprofit must have an active public website on its own domain. Social media pages and registrar placeholder pages are not accepted.
- Distinction from SAM.gov: To apply for U.S. federal grants through SAM.gov as of April 4, 2022, the identifier used instead of D-U-N-S is UEI (Unique Entity ID).
