So says Alex Karp, the head of a Silicon Valley company. He believes, that in the age of AI, conventional employees will give way to people who think differently. In his view, autistic people, narcissists, and psychopaths are willing to take risks, find unconventional solutions, and work without days off. By 2027, neurodivergence could become a hiring advantage at 25% of large companies. “Degrees are already losing their value — employers are increasingly looking for people with an ‘edge’”, – says Alex Karp.

More and more often, I come across people online who are disillusioned by yet another round of high-profile debates about the future of IT and careers in the age of AI. Developers complain that algorithms are devaluing conventional coding, while juniors struggle because they have no idea which direction to grow in. And the main problem, in my view, is that people read provocative quotes from Silicon Valley executives and take them far too literally, without trying to compare the sensational headlines with actual statistics and research.

So, I can’t tell you how to instantly diagnose yourself with that “special something” needed to work at Palantir, but as someone who has compared tech giants’ rhetoric with analysts’ reports, I can easily explain what is really going on here 🙂

First, of course, there is the statement by Palantir CEO Alex Karp. He speaks openly about his dyslexia and argues that the rise of generative AI will devalue traditional degrees, while the only people with a secure future will be either skilled manual workers or neurodivergent people capable of taking risks and generating nonlinear ideas. It sounds extremely compelling, especially considering that Elon Musk and Peter Thiel have previously expressed similar views about the advantages of autism or Asperger’s syndrome for innovation.

However, when this argument is broken down point by point, a rather intriguing picture emerges:

The myth of “psychopaths and narcissists” as ideal employees. The attempt to present “dark triad” traits as the key to a successful career is contradicted by sociological data. Studies show that narcissism and psychopathy are indeed more common among top executives (up to 4%) than in the general population (around 1%). However, the same studies demonstrate that, in the long run, toxic leaders undermine psychological safety, drive up to a third of employees to quit, and cause companies financial losses. Calling this a “formula for success” for an average employee is a clear distortion of the facts.

The real numbers behind corporate hiring. The trend toward embracing neurodiversity is real: according to Gartner, к 2027 году 20% крупных торговых организаций будут целенаправленно привлекать нейроотличных специалистов. Сам Palantir запустил программы Neurodivergent Fellowship and Meritocracy Fellowship, selecting 22 high-scoring candidates without university degrees from a pool of 500 applicants and offering them a stipend of $5,400 per month. They do not commit you to anything—there is no need to blindly believe that without a diagnosis, the path into the profession will be closed in 2026.

All the more so because automation, which continues to grow every year, really does free us from routinely rewriting code and preparing reports, but it calls not for mental health disorders, but for intellectual flexibility, an understanding of architecture, and the ability to define tasks for AI.

And I sincerely believe that such claims should be examined soberly, so that people have the opportunity to develop genuine engineering skills rather than search medical reference books for their own “superpowers” in the hope of landing an easy offer.

Only people with mental health conditions will be able to build successful careers in 2026.
