AD REM: a brochure website for a human rights project combating violence against children and women<\/p>\n"},"content":{"rendered":"

Ad Rem is a human rights project staffed by experienced lawyers, attorneys, and researchers. The team handles complex custody cases and helps women and children affected by discrimination, domestic abuse, and sexualized violence. It also publishes research and practical guides.<\/p>

The website serves three distinct audiences, and this shaped the entire design:<\/p>

  1. A person in crisis<\/strong>, who needs help right now. They should not have to search for anything or figure out how the website is structured.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Journalists, experts, and partners<\/strong>, who review the research and assess whether the team can be trusted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Potential supporters and ambassadors<\/strong>, who need to see tangible results and support from the professional community.<\/li>\n<\/ol>

    A structure where help is always just one click away<\/h4>

    Button “Get Help”<\/strong> is available both in the menu and on the home screen. It leads to a dedicated page where users do not have to search for anything. The rest of the navigation is straightforward: “About Us,” “Reports,” “Ambassadors,” and “Contacts.” This is essential for a website dealing with such a sensitive topic. In a stressful situation, extra steps and a complicated menu mean losing the user.<\/p>

    The “Police Reporting Assistant” section<\/h4>

    A service for those who do not have a lawyer or cannot afford one. The page covers three scenarios:<\/p>

      \n
    • Telegram bot<\/strong> helps users file a report with the police. It asks guiding questions that accurately describe the situation and raise “red flags” that police officers are required to address. The bot works through the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ online reporting portals, so the report will be reviewed even if a police officer refuses to accept it in person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • A step-by-step guide to documenting physical violence<\/strong>: where to undergo a forensic medical examination, what to do if the forensic examination bureau only accepts patients with a police referral, and what to do if the medical certificate was issued elsewhere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Information about the nearest shelters<\/strong> where they can find refuge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>

      The page is written in plain language and divided into clear sections with numbered steps and a single primary button. All of this is designed to help someone without legal training take the next step.<\/p>

      Library of Research and Guides<\/h4>

      The website features nine documents in the “Research” section. I created a custom post type for them, along with a catalog offering PDF downloads. These include both comprehensive reports and concise practical resources:<\/p>

      • research on violence:<\/strong> the evacuation of domestic violence survivors, the abduction of children from their mothers, “Torn from Childhood: The Forced Separation of a Child from Their Mother,” early and forced marriages in the republics of the North Caucasus, and an analysis of how state institutions are used against women survivors;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • practical guides:<\/strong> documenting physical injuries, obtaining an out-of-court divorce, and a guide for parents on bullying at school;<\/li>\n\n\n\n

        New documents are added without my involvement: the team uploads a file and enters its title and date, and the page and homepage card update automatically. The website itself confirms this: the latest resources are dated April and September 2026, even though the website was launched in late 2023.<\/p>

        Trust and Social Proof<\/h4>

        For a human rights project, trust is the most important asset, so the home page features two sections:<\/p>

        • “Our Supporters”<\/strong> featuring testimonials from prominent legal experts, attorneys, and journalists. Each testimonial includes the person’s name, profession, and a link to their profile. These are not anonymous quotes—their authenticity can be verified.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • “Media About Us”<\/strong> featuring articles by the Agency for Social Information, T—J, Slovo Zashchite, Novy Ochag, and other media outlets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>

          Communication Channels and Online Presence<\/h4>

          The website is connected to Telegram, Twitter, Medium, and Yandex Zen. The email address is protected from spam bots (it is hidden from automated harvesters), while Open Graph and Twitter Cards are configured for social media, ensuring that links look polished when shared in messaging apps and on social networks.<\/p>

          Design and Atmosphere<\/h4>

          A restrained color palette (navy blue and warm beige) and understated typography. A project addressing this subject should look neither aggressive nor commercial. The website should convey a sense of security and professionalism.<\/p>

          • The website has been up and running since 2023 and continues to grow, with research, practical tools, and resources for different audiences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Those affected get a tool they can use to have their appeal officially registered on their own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • The team can publish content independently, without a developer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Specialist media outlets cite the project, and prominent lawyers endorse it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>

            What this means for your project<\/h3>

            If you need a website for an NGO, foundation, legal practice, or another project whose audience comes to it during a difficult time, I know how to:<\/p>
